Forrest Forrest Art

And I just looked to make sure I was right. Wheeler was 5'2", which is shorter than ME (I had to get a kid to reach a box in my closet this morning . What would I do without high school boys? Look longingly at those upper shelves.) Forrest was 6'2". That must be one heck of a hole.

I couldn't resist. My favorite photo of Wheeler...who, BTW, did have the good sense to have at least one fantastic person serving under him......(more on that later).

You might recognize at least one of the guys in the photo with Wheeler.....

Patrick, I'd sort of missed that battle until lately....sometimes it takes a baseball bat over the head for me to pay attention. I was reading a book about a partisan named Jack Hinson and it features prominently in his story. And diane or someone can correct me, but I believe this is the one where--Virgil?--Earp is firing artillery on the Union side and, as she says, Forrest had a couple of horse shot from under him. It's pure John Ford--charging right up the main street into the artillery. It's way overlooked....after all, it's not in Old Virginny.

You are correct! It was Virgil Earp of the 83rd Illinois who lined up artillery and blasted Forrest as he and his men came down the main street of Dover. He got horse and rider - Forrest was wounded but it's uncertain how badly or where. It appears from some accounts - again uncertain - that Forrest was using a cane when he offered his sword to Wheeler. Indeed - he was a bear when Wheeler talked to him!

Reality is a far cry from what Ted Turner envisioned.

This is Forrest and his troops escaping Ft Donelson, an illustration from "That Devil Forrest" by Wyeth. The artists who did this group are Thulstrup, Rogers, Klepper, Redwood, Hitchcock and Carleton. They were publishing house illustrators at the time Wyeth first published this book.

Which is why I paid big bucks for the thing! I love those illustrations!
