Forrest Forrest Art

Okay....when I posted the pic of Wheeler and Teddy, there was a severe storm bearing down on us, so I didn't get to post this:

The most amazing person to serve under Wheeler and my all-time favorite..................Marcellus Pointer

It looks like a reenactment
Exactly what I was thinking. The old and overweight soldiers, pristine grey uniforms :nah disagree:
That's why I prefer Troiani or Rocco's work over Strain and some others. Strain's work looks very nice, but its as if he and many others just use reenactors as their models.

Yes, I was really taken by that "Lost Ford" painting, and I researched Emma Sansom this afternoon. Great story! But I am particularly interested in Col. Robert McCulloch (Black haired Bob) because he lived in and is buried in my home town, and was a huge hero and popular citizen around here. I know the Butternut Boys rode with Forrest, and I am pretty sure Black Bob will appear, sooner or later, in one or two pieces of art. When those come up, please note it in your captions. I will be very grateful.

You see, my problem is this: When these paintings come up with a particular title...for instance...."Forrest at thus and such a fork in the road", most of you folks know exactly what it refers to, and who is depicted. But I don't. So I would really like the additional explanation--ESPECIALLY if Black Bob is shown anywhere in the painting.

I think I have spotted him in one such. At least, I see an officer in the background whose face appears very much to be based on a famous photo portrait of Col. McCulloch.

But I will really appreciate it if you folks could point him out to me....if you see him depicted and know he was there at that particular moment that is shown in the painting.

Thanks much to all of you,
Patrick

I'm glad you mentioned this. That happens a lot and I try to follow the thread in hopes that I can figure it out but eventually, the discussion changes or I loose it.
There is another thread here on Black Bob McCulloch and his cousin, Red Bob. It has the period photos of them. Several years ago, I began reading about my ancestor's unit and every cavalry battle I found---there was Black Bob. So, I have a lot of notes about him. The 2nd Missouri served under General Chalmers first and fought in the battle here where I live: Collierville.
So check out that other thread on him and let me know if you are in search of anything specific.

Steve, can you give us a link to it. I'm glad you said that, because I vaguely THOUGHT I remembered a discussion--but then this time of year I'm mostly hallucinating.

Thanks for the compliment. Marcellus would be appreciative I'm sure. For some technical reasons, including his apparent age (born in 1841) we believe this was taken in Dallas ca 1875. The uniform may belong to a Confederate Veterans organization, although his name doesn't appear on any on the Dallas rolls.

Compare to this one in civvies;

Thanks, DixieRifles. Yes, I have followed and contributed to the Black Bob / White Bob thread. I'll give a shout if I see an obvious likeness of Black Bob in any of the Forrest art that is posted.
