At 1st Manassas He was leading a charge at Sudley Road on a Union battery in support of fellow North Carolinian Thomas Clingman and his cousin Colonel Jubal Early. Historians still aren't sure if the fatal bullet was from friendly fire from either a Mississippi or Alabama regiment or from a Northen regiment.
