If Antietam is the choice, there are plenty of hotels within 30 minutes -- Harpers Ferry, Martinsburg, Winchester and Hagerstown.

Thanks. I will be visiting in June regardless of how the vote here happens. My plan is to fly in as early as I can on a Tuesday,drive straight to Sharpsburg and spend the rest of the day,all day Wednesday and Thursday morning there. I'll head to Chestertown early Thursday afternoon.

heading east on Thursday in June is usually safe, it's Friday - Sunday that can be a nightmare. Chestertown is a nice quiet quaint place. Stayed at the Brampton b&b there

I'm more surprised by the high interest in Nashville/Franklin given how little of those sites have been preserved.

Still lot to see may not open ground as most NMP … But in Franklin Walk 2 miles from Winstead hill on the Anniversary Nov. 30th Reach the carter house and the sun starts fading over the western hills .. Plus see bullet holes in the carter office , the home and marks on the smoke house. The sunlight fades and then remember a Division went in with torches as their only source of light besides the muzzle flashes at the works ... I know more about franklin than any other battle... The whole TN 1864 campaign itself for me is amazing yet sad … high hopes and then the retreat almost the same way the AOT went.

Sorry I got carried away I voted for it Its my passion worked so hard since 2000 to get Get Franklin Remembered as some of the bloodiest fighting of the Civil War in 5 hrs.

Would mention it be a bit of a commute, but those staying longer Fort Pillow might be a good optional trip

Sure sounds like a lot of driving is there not a place that once you arrive that it might not have a lot of driving. Where's the nearest airport for those who fly to these trips?

We flew into Baltimore on our trip in 2008...other than arriving in pitch darkness in the midst of a really severe thunderstorm, it was a great experience--and they have crab cakes in the airport! (Easy onto I-70 to Frederick and Hagerstown).

Baltimore can be rough in the inner city. I visited Green Mount Cemetery and General Armistead's grave it was a pretty rough city.

But you don't have to go into town if you fly in...

Hmmm many a time I've left a place at 6 or 6:30 to get some where by 8 or 8:30 and then stay to 5 or 6 before driving back...….never been a problem for me before...……

I've been doing the same to STL all summer for numerous doctor appts...........

We live two hours from anywhere... Anywhere you'd really want to be, anyhow. It's a three-hour plus trip for us to fly out of Austin, which is the most cost-effective airport anywhere close to us.

The area surrounding the Antietam Battlefield is about as rural as Shiloh. If Antietam is the choice, participants will need to get to Antietam vicinity on their own. No car snakes from Baltimore or DC.

Get your concealed carry permit or carry a shotgun or rifle in vehicle no AR15s Im sure don't know all the laws but yes

I must admit, my initial instinct is Shiloh. I have been leaning that way, because of Corinth, and while a ways off Fort Donelson or Fort Pillow, and @Ole Miss bringing up Brice's Crossroads has me more excited about that option.

Also Antietam and Harper's Ferry has held a certain level of attraction to me, especially since my GG-Grandfather W. McAlister is said to have fought at Harper's Ferry, and "Getesburg" in old letters with the rest of his record being guess work. Also believe it or not James N. assessment of the Sharpsburg/Antietam area makes me like that option more. I hate cities and large groups of people

(A side note on my GG-Grandfather McAlister, supposedly his best friend in the Confederate Army was one Joseph Edward Johnson who was killed early in the war, he named my G-Grandfather, Joseph Edward Johnson McAlister after him and the Edward part was passed to my Grandfather and myself. What little I've found indicates he may have been in the 33rd Virginia, perhaps a thread is needed. Also concerning his son, my G-Grandfather, he was 1st Texas Co. I in the Spanish-American War, and one night on picket duty got praised for his almost shooting a believed trespasser. His Corps Commander Fitzhugh Lee while he was checking on pickets.)


But I shall hold my vote off till tomorrow, I've decided to give my vote to my friend and companion at Vicksburg Tom, as he is excited at the prospect of next year's gathering and wanting to go. So till I talk to and update him I'll continue waiting.

Middle tn big and small awesome .. dad has cancer again May be a day trip for me if Shiloh wins im looking for campgrounds or sleep in car but Johnsonville State Historic Park is nice to closer than Pillow and Donelson
