Several years ago, I read an interesting article on a long dead website, that was impeccably researched with good references. What caught my attention most in it was ordnance returns from the Army of the Trans-Mississippi, specifically Walker's Texas Division, as it mentioned Colt revolving rifles. I soon moved on, and didn't go back to reference it till it was gone, and I thought I lost track of where that information was forever.
However I discovered my past self was a bit smarter than my current self and had downloaded the article, (I guess it was free, we're talking like 14 or 15 years ago), and stored it on a thumb drive I forgot about and rediscovered in a move. Thank you past me!!! He must of not known what he was doing cause he downloaded it three times!
But since this is data I've not found on the internet in years, here it is for posterity.
August 1863
2,697 .69 Caliber Percussion Muskets (most likely percussion conversions of M1816's and M1842 mixed in)
1,485 Enfield Rifles (most likely rifle-muskets I would think)
43 Colt Repeating Rifles (Most likely M1855 Root Revolving Rifles)
Spring 1864, (post Red River Campaign)
848 .69 Caliber Percussion Muskets
2,353 Rifles, (Most likely a mix of P1853 Enfields and M1861 Springfields)
Well hope this is useful information to anyone looking for information on Red River Campaign weapons. As I read more of that long aritcle I might find more information, but I didn't write it Its interesting to me.
I just find it interesting that the Colt Rifles were apparently ditched after Red River. And I love it because there was a bunch of Dismounted Cavalry in that Division so to anyone who reenacts with them as that: TAKE THIS!!!!! DITCH THE REVOLVERS!!!!
Now I know where to look for the original reference...
