Evans served in Lawton's/Gordon's Georgia Brigade, initially as Colonel of the 31st Georgia. After the Battle of the Wilderness, when Brigadier Gordon was given a division command, Evans rose to command the brigade, doing so superbly at Spotsylvania; he would be promoted to Brigadier on May 14th following his actions at the Mule Shoe. He would be wounded at the Battle of the Monocacy, putting him out of action until October, rejoining to take part in the Battle of Cedar Creek.
In 1865, with Gordon now commanding the corps, Evans took command of Gordon's Division, leading it through the last stages of the Petersburg campaign and on to Appomattox.

Evans was behind the drive to put a statue of General/Governor Gordon in front of the Georgia State Capitol, which he succeeded in 1907. Of course, this statue is a hot topic in my home state, but that's beyond the scope of what I know about Evans himself.

A rare love story, the devotion of a very brave man for his remarkable wife and children, and it is a history of man's unfailing duty to the Southern cause during the Civil War. It's a story of people who care and feel deeply for each other and for their wounded country. In short, this is like no other personal record of the Civil War.

Cheers,
