Hello Gang Thanks for having me! I am a member of The Son's Of The Confederacy and need information om my Great Great Grandfathers younger brother! His name was Edgard "Edward" Calvin Ellington We know for a fact he was born Oct 29-1829 in Campton, Walton County, Georgia but his death is a problem for us! he died on Sep 4-1862 in battle "I assume the Maryland Campaign" but then is gets tricky, We always assumed he died in Virginia Edgard is something of a mystery and we would like more information on him! Can someone please help me locate his CSA records so we can put the mystery to bed once and for all! Note there is an E.C Ellington who was a Confederate coronal from Quitman they are two separate people!

His brothers and sisters are as follows,

  • Joel Ellington {My Great Great Grandfather}
  • William Archibald Ellington
  • Jessie Ellington
  • Susan Ivy
  • Jamerson Ellington
  • Robert Caswell Ellington
  • Edgard "Edward" Calvin Ellington
  • Martha Ann Griffin

I don't know if you are the person who put information on the Find a Grave for Edgard Ellington or if you have seen that. It includes a photo of a CMSR card and links Edgard to the 10th Georgia. But the card show is for another man. What is the source of the information of his death date?

His nephew Jesse Samuel Calvin Ellington wrote extensive note and Family records published in the William & Mary Quarterly Vol 12, 1932 Jesse's father was Edgard Calvin Ellington's older brother so I would assume the dates would be from a family bible

We had several Confederate Vets in my family and they are as follows

1. Jamison Ellington March26th 1825– January 7th 1861 killed in Martinsville Mississippi while serving under Captain Jack Loyal.

2. Edgard Calvin Ellington October 29th 1829-September 4th 1862 Killed in Battle. Was a PVT Not a Colonel He is Confused with EC Ellington of Quitman Ga They are 2 separate people!

3.James Ellington II March 12th 1820-September 28th 1864 died of Typhoid while on furlough.

4. Sidney Ross Ellington Sep 8th 1832 DEATH July 24th 1862 (My Great Grandfather's Uncle)

5. Stephen Benjamin Ellington 1838-May 3rd 1863 Killed at the battle of Chancellorsville.

6. Albert Harvey Ellington October 26th 1843 -Dec 22nd 1919 (Great Grandfather's Brother)

7. Sidney Ross Ellington February 8th 1847 – December 13th 1916 Lived to father 20 children in the Gum Creek District of Oxford Georgia! (My Great Grandfather)

Most of the above served Cobb's Legion Infantry

Edgard did not pop out when I looked for him at Ancestry.com. Next I tried to identify a battle that took place on September 4, 1862. The only engagement I could find was the ambush of a Union train in Louisiana. The source did not indicate there were Confederate deaths. The date September 4, 1862 was very conspicuous as the start of Lee's Maryland campaign. Two notable things occurred: 1) General D. H. Hill moved his command across the Potomac and into Maryland. 2) A demonstration was made against Union Forces to mask Lee's infantry movements. The cavalry part of Cobb's Legion was engaged in the screening operation.

Based on a roster of Cobb's Legion at url:

This would seem to cover Sidney Ross, Albert Harvey, and Stephen Benjamin.

The map showing the crossing suggests some resistance where Anderson and Ripley crossed. Anderson's forces seem to be composed of North Carolina units; Ripley on the other hand has the following units:

Units which make up this Brigade:
44th Georgia Infantry
4th Georgia Infantry
1st North Carolina Infantry
3rd North Carolina Infantry
