His commission as brigadier general came on January 7, 1862.As such he was in charge of coastal or lower Mississippi River fortifications, mainly Forts Jackson and St. Philip. The majority of his organized units were sent north to Cornith in the pre-Shiloh buildup. He was left with inadequate forces to defend New Orleans. He was obliged to sutrender on April,28, 1862. After his exchange on August 27, 1862 he was given charge of an infantry brigade for operations in Kentucky.

What brigade?

The only brigade I see him commanding around this time would have been the 4th brigade in Wither's division also known as the Reserve Division. He later commanded this division for a short while.
Actually he only commanded the brigade from Aug. 27 through Oct. 12, 1862 and the division from Oct.12 through Nov.10,1862. Brief on both counts. He then went on to be Bragg's staff chief.
