The seat he filled in Congress was that of Stephen A. Corker, who served only 39 days. There had been a great amount of controversy between Corker and his black opponent,Thomas P. Beard. Dubose served just one term, from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873.

Dubose lost the next election to his Republican opponent,James Crawford Freeman. Freeman was the Congressman who appointed Henry Ossian Flipper to West Point. Flipper became the first Black graduate of West Point.
