Picked this up today at a used book store. Look like an interesting book. There are probably not all that many books on the subject of Cubans in the Confederacy. While I do not recognize any of the name, their stories may be interesting none the less. It is often claimed that Cuban patriots' fighting for liberation from Spain tended to identify the southern Cause with revolutionary struggle. I guess I will need to read the book to find out if it is true.

The only things I remember about Cuba and the American Civil War were that American filibusters had planned to invade Cuba and annex it to the U.S. as a southern slave state and that it was a trans-shipment point for captains running the blockade. For the meaning of filibuster think pirate, or privateer if you want to be generous.

I've always had a special fondness for Col. Ambrosio Gonzales.
He kind of resembled Gen. Beauregard somewhat ( kind of like Lee and Pendleton) and was on the general's staff for a while.I would almost bet the spectators did a "double take" when those two walked by. I read where he later became an Artillery Colonel and declined promotion to General six times.
