I understand how important reconcilliation was to reconstruction, but I sometimes can't help but wonder how better off we'd be today if we tried and hanged the Confederate leadership to stop the Lost Cause propagation in its tracks. Think denazification after WW2.

I think about this a lot. They must have figured in the long run a few hangings would've caused more sectional strife. They were likely right. But who knows. "Let em down easy" was the course they thought best at the time.

You mean line em up like Josie Wales? You have to admit that a sh** load of people died and only Wirtz got hanged. I believe in Georgia the fire eaters pushed nationalism so hard , you were accused of being a coward if you were against it. Nobody likes to be called yellow. I know by the time the war ended the actual people doing the killing were tired of it and got along better than the people who started it.

I'm not convinced Wirz didn't have his hands tied, & was the fall guy for others.

Yeah, I get the intricacies, that's it's layered & all that. Didn't even LEE think he'd be hung though? Lord knows I'm no history expert. I'm simply saying it's of interest to me, & stands out about 1865. I googled the headline I'd run across back when I did my manuscript but can't find it online.
