CSA Hat Badge ?

This item was found in 1972 on the Jackson River in VA . I have seen a few repos but none like this can anyone tell me what era this may be from? I have looked online and I cannot even find a post with a authentic one in this style. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would like to see a real one. post a photo if anyone has one or any info would be helpful thanks in advance.

yes I have seen many repos hope someone will post the real deal would love to see what it looked like. I saw one in a John Wayne movie one time also. I know they also made some for the vets back in the day too.

That type of "pin back" is far from ACW vintage and most likely 20th century centennial vintage. Around the time of the ACW the backs had the loops and soldered pins that we are familiar with, for the type of articulating attachment on the obverse, T-back pins were used.

He already did, check the above answer from package4. Also, Every Southern state had a CV association and had hat wreaths as the one below on a CS Vets hat I have and when the UCV came into being in 1889 most everything went to UCV the back of the one below is similar to the CW period one that package4 refers to.

Yes I think I should have said was did they ever use a badge like the one I had posted during the war or was that style made after the war thanks again.

From what I've read, that safety clasp used on the first badge show didn't come into being until the 1920's. On a whim, last week I ordered the cap badge book by Campbell and O'Donnell. It came yesterday and I had not yet opened it. So, before responding I opened it and most of what they had was sewn onto the hat in some way. Most of the Civil War examples were gold bullion wire on a black cloth oval. They didn't show any CS examples that I could see from my brief scan. What they did show was a whole lot more hat badges than I had ever dreamed of! I have a U.S. Army insignia book but it's a little difficult to get to right now even though it"s only about 4 inches away. I think wreath badges like the one at the beginning of this thread may date no earlier than the Indian Wars period. Maybe one day I'll drag my army book out of it's resting place and see what it says.

There are US ones also. I think original US ones had the wreath and US seperate with the individual letters seperate as well.
