Confederate? Script E Engineer Cap Insignia

Hello,
I have what I believe is a confederate script e officers cap insignia. Is there anyone who can help me confirm this? From my research online, the script e in this style was used by confederate engineer soldiers. I've seen this style e on confederate buttons. I'm being told it is not a confederate item but probably a union Insignia. Any help or second opinions would be greatly appreciated. I also believe the Insignia is an original piece.

Its not yankee as it would be a castle. The CS used the same. Anything is possible would have to see how the back of the E is made.
