Hi Everyone,
I need some help again. This time it's with a Confederate button. I'm in Gettysburg and an antique store has this button for sale (it's a little cheaper than the price shown) but I couldn't find it anywhere on-line. I just want to make sure it's authentic before I treat myself. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Kind of hard to tell from that fuzzy photo... you might browse this reference site and check details very carefully to see if you see one that might be a match.

I apologize for the blurry photo, I was taking it through a glass cabinet. The button has an eagle with 11 stars close together right over top of the eagle. I looked it up but can't seem to find it. Not sure if the new picture helps.

Boy I don't know... I'm not an expert so I hate to say one way or the other, but if I couldn't find an exact front/back match in the Tice or Albert reference books I would be careful. $50 seems a bit below market for a Confederate staff officer button from the little I know... which could be read two ways; bargain or red flag...?

I agree with E Being that you are in Gettysburg and the price is only $50 I would pass, Do you happen to know what the back-mark was. CS Staff officers buttons aren't rare but they are expensive.

I wasn't able to see the back mark. I've been looking on sites off and on all day and can't find anything like it. I think you are all right so I'm going to pass. It just seems to good to be true!

Believe it or not it looks to be a general staff button made by T.W & W/Paris and highly unlikely that someone is making a reproduction of this particular button. The back mark should have the TWW Paris mark and if so it would be a steal at that price. Every once in a while you do come upon an item that the seller just doesn't know what it is. The button is CS225A1 in Tice's button book.

I think it looks okay - it's obviously been in the ground a long time and I doubt it would've been faked that long ago.

Not being very well informed on buttons I would have probably bought it, I would have thought to myself that it was quite a common button which would explain why it was so cheap. You are obviously a lot smarter than me, at least you asked the question on the forum.

The back-mark is the key to any CW button. The face does look like a TW&W but you need to check the back-mark.

I am going to call the place that had the button and see if they can give me a little more information.
I don't own any either of the books by Albert or Tice. If anyone has a copy, can you share a picture from the book of button CS225A1? I would just like to match at least the face of the button before I decide if I want to try to get it.

I would go ahead and get it if I were you... the other way of looking at it is "it's only $50..." i.e. not the end of the world even if it turns out to be a bust, but if it's a match like Pack4 suggests, then you've got a nice button for a great price!
