I went online to look for similar examples and came up with one that sold at auction in 2005 for $20, so the collecting community doesn't think much of it. I'd like to see who was producing these, most likely for the reenactment or skirmishing folks.......I thought maybe Dixie was producing these, but no joy, definitely a fantasy item.
Is this a good place to point out that fakers and reproduction makers will often make something crude looking and call it "Confederate"? The fact is that while the Confederate government had supply problems, most of their manufactured goods were well made. The quality of machined goods was really high in the 1800's. I took apart my 1843 single shot pistol and it has better fit and finish than some of my modern guns.

Not to mention that the copper used in the "canteen" would have been used elsewhere and not on a canteen issue. Copper was desperately needed for percussion caps.
