Does anyone know if there is any publication of state or unit insignias found on brass coat buttons?

I have found several with different designs and wonder if they can be identified.

Welcome to the forum Will66.

Alphaeus Albert did several books on American Military Buttons and they are the standard reference books for button collectors. You will want to obtain the following book:

Buttons Of The Confederacy By Alphaeus H. Albert

These might also be of interest.

I'm really late to the party!

Albert's book is a great catalog.
Supplement it with Bazelon and/or McGuinn.

Albert's was once the golden standard... but times have changed, and better options have since been published - If you want the authoritative work, go with Warren K. Tice... it is the 'button bible' hands down. Just be prepared, your gonna have to pay to play with Tice's book.

(Same thing with ACW bullet references... the days of McKee & Mason having the #1 publication on the subject have slipped on by. Dean Thomas' 'Round Ball to Rimfire' series is what you want.)

If your on a very restrictive budget, head over to Harry Ridgeway's site... and don't be afraid to shoot him an email with any questions.

You can find him here: http://relicman.com/

Harry Ridgeway has a wonderful site and is incredibly helpful, if you do not want to spend the buck on the afore mentioned books to identify a couple of buttons.

Post a couple of pictures of the front and back of each on this thread and you will most likely have an answer in minutes.

Buy the books if you think you are going to collect ACW buttons, they will pay for themselves time and again. Albert's with Tice is the way to go IMHO.
