Confed hacker?

Picked this up at a Massive CW estate sale, according to the link #2 it is a nice find. I know I would have like to have had it vice a ka-bar in Iraq.

This would appear to be a M1841 Ames Navy cutlass with the guard removed. Note the slot in the pommel for the top of the knuckle guard. The Confederate sword shown in your link doesn't have such a notch.

No matter how much everybody wants these things to be some bodacious Confederate Side Knife, the truth of the matter is that the vast majority of them were converted to Sugar Cane and Corn Knives after the ACW. To believe one is real it would have had to have been dug on a site in context with other ACW materials. None of the ones I have seen over the years have ever been dug, but rather turned up on farms. That is, until a dealer got ahold of them!

@Richard E. Schenk is spot on. It's an Ames naval Cutlass and is not CS. I have always loved these as most were made after the CW for various uses such as chopping cotton, tabaco etc

Thought after two cups of coffee - post-war modified stage weapon, guard removed so that it resembled a Roman Gladius?
