Hello, I recently picked this up at an estate sale and was hoping to find out what it is I have here. I haven't had it tested but I'm assuming it's silver. The bar with the soldier's name look like it's missing the ring that would have connected the 2 pieces. I tried researching the name but didn't come up with anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here are a few photos. Thanks again

Very nice piece! Overall craftsmanship makes me think this example may be wartime, rather than post. There was likely a ribbon or a ring connecting the name bar to the badge itself.

Looks like your man enlisted in early 1864. Late war volunteers received hefty bounties and it wasn't uncommon for them to spend some of that money on a fancy badge.

I have a couple ornate silver badges that I suspect were purchased with 1864 reenlistment/volunteer bounties

I was wondering if it was a war time badge when I saw he enlisted early 1864. Thank you for the extra detailed information. I really appreciate it.

Welcome, enjoy. Great looking badge

A great find and ID badges evidently came in a wide variety of styles as evidenced by this one that came my way. View attachment 556839

I believe these were not dog tags but mail tags or key tags. Tiffany's used to do the same thing with jewelry.it was where if you lost your keys you could return them to the post office and have them delivered back to you

Quite a few years back , DAV I think it was that use to send you a miniature license plate for your key ring. The back stated if found drop in any mailbox and they would be returned to owner.
Exactly what I think redbob has unfortunately. There are many variations of ID pieces but that patent date with the shape and label are often labeled as civil war

It's been awhile but I finally got around to having both pieces tested with an XRF analyzer. They both test positive for coin silver.
