Clove Cake

This is a type of cake I like a lot.

1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons molasses
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon allspice
a grating of nutmeg
1 egg and 1 egg yolk
1 cup sour milk
2 cups flour with small teaspoon soda

Combine ingredients and bake in a moderate oven. Sweet milk will not give the same texture to this cake. Try the old trick of adding two teaspoons of vinegar to sweet milk if you have no sour.

Does this have a much stronger taste then spice cake?

About the same If you make spice cake from scratch, but stronger than a basic modern box cake.

Cloves are a little too strong for me usually, and I have smoked Clove cigarettes. Otherwise I would think the cake would be very good. I would still be game to try the cake. I used to own a piece of WWII era Fruit Cake, although I would not have eaten that.

It was Teddy Roosevelt's favorite cake. His wife Edith made it and it is in "First Lady's Cook Book".
