Civil war orange cake

CIVIL WAR ORANGE CAKE (General
Ogelthorpe)
1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. soda
2 c. sifted flour
1 c. buttermilk
1/2 c. chopped raisins
2 orange peels, ground


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream butter, sugar and eggs. Add buttermilk. Add dry ingredients. Save juice from 2 oranges. Spread mixture in 13 x 9 x 2 inch greased pan. Bake until golden and pulls away from edges. Mix equal parts of orange juice and sugar. Pour over hot cake. Is great served with wassail spiced tea.

WASSAIL
1 qt. boiling water
8 tea bags
1 gallon apple cider
1 c. lemon juice
2 1/4 c. brown sugar, packed
Ground allspice to taste
Ground cloves to taste
1 bottle burgundy
4 broken cinnamon sticks


Pour boiling water over tea bags in a large pan. Brew 5 minutes. Remove tea bags. Add cider, lemon juice, sugar and spices. Bring to a boil, then simmer, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes. Remove spices and cinnamon by straining. Add burgundy and heat through. Serve warm.
