Dave Powell would be the guy to get for this. Have exchanged a few emails with him but really do not know the man. My editor at Georgia Backroads is also very familiar with this battlefield. I could enlist his help with recommendations on all travel aspects. So close to Missionary Ridge and Chattanooga. I went to the battlefield years ago, as coincidentally, my great, great, great grandfather had his farm on what was Ft. Oglethorpe. He sold some of the land to the government for the fort and other land I think for the battlefield park.

Powell does a weekend tour with the Park Historian, Jim Ogden, early Spring every year. I attended this year. They do a great job. Ogden or another Ranger would assist.

Have I missed a post with a date being set? Let's not forget this trip! I am planning already to fly in and make a week of it. Going to drive down to Montgomery AL too and visit the old family homestead from the 1780's. Let's do this!!

This sounds like a good idea.very important that even though this is in the mountain region of Georgia it can get really hot.if you haven't lived in the south this can become very uncomfortable so look for the excursion to take place around the anniversary date or later.it is easier to put on a sweater then find airconditioning on the battlefield.

Having lived in Atlanta for 20 years, I can tell you that if you plan the reunion for October (the month the battle actually occurred) you will find north Georgia beautiful.

Since this type of thing is completely new to me..... For example, Gettysburg is a long days drive for me but I could get there and have my own car. Chattanooga, not so much. If I flew in to Chattanooga would I need to rent a car or would someone from the group be willing to pick up the airport, or what? Would we take a bus to the battlefield or take our own (or rental cars?). Unfortunately, I didn't know about this particular forum until about last week and I can't get off work to get to Gettysburg this year - too short a notice for what I do. But I can plan for next year - but I need to know what I'm working with for potential costs. Thank you so much in advance for help.

You need to take your own car or rental to Chickamauga as it is huge,even a marathoner would have trouble walking it.

There are many ACW related sites in a short drive of Chattanooga vicinity. I dare say too many to visit and thoroughly take in even if you stay 2 weeks. Shermans Atlanta campaign started just south of this area.

Plan for a car and as much time as you can muster.

I would recommend that you check prices into Atlanta as well. Not too far away and usually much cheaper on flights. Some of us that are flying in might be able to help out and carpool. I know that I would not mind helping out in that way.

Folks, I was at Chickamauga a few days ago doing research for my biography of Willich. Met with both Lee White and Jim Ogden. It would be hard to find two better people on any battlefield. I am going to see Dave Powell tomorrow at the Kenosha WI all day event. Of course, Eric W and others know him well. Just scanned pages from his Maps of Chickamauga book. The detail is astounding. I will try to make this trip a priority next year.

Most of the gang is getting ready to converge on Gettysburg so they may not be seeing this thread much until they march home from Gettysburg. I really want in on next year's campaign too. Been to Chickamauga once and immediately wanted to go back. I plan to drive to next year's gathering too. I surely wanna help any way I can with the logistics too.
