Command of the 116th New York went to Major George M. Love when Chapin fell at Port Hudson. Now a colonel Love would later receive the Medal Of Honor for his action at the Battle of Cedar Creek.

The 44th New York that he was Captain, major, then Lt. Colonel of became known as the "Ellsworth Avengers". Several members of the regiment had been members of Ellsworth's Chicago Zouve Cadets. The first Colonel of the unit, Stephen W.Stryker, was a Lt. in Ellsworth's regiment.
