He succeeded the wounded "Rooney" Lee in brigade command at Brandy Station. He led this unit apparently as a colonel through Aldie, Middleburg, Gettysburg and into the Bristoe Campaign, then He was promoted to Brigadier.
 
For his performances on the Rappahannock between Warrenton and Frdricksburg while commanding the 13th Vitginia, 2nd North Carolina,and the 61st Virginia Chambliss got a commendation from Robert E. Lee and was later assigned to Rooney Lee's brigade.

He was again commended for bravery on the Rappahanock several months later, this time by Lee and Stuart.He and about 50 men drove back 2 squadrons of Federal Cavalry at Beverly Ford and took a number of prisoners. This was in April 1863.
