He was dispatched at the head of the California Column to New Mexico and Arizona to help relieve the soldiers in that area.The March took five months and involved some fighting against hostile Indians. This probably was in 1862 as that's when he commanded the California Column.
 
Who was who in the Civil War lists a book about him by Aurora Hunt titled "James A. Carleton,1814-1873, Frontier Dragoon. This could be a typo or misprint but wasn't'his middle initial "H"?
