Cap Box ??

Sweet, would you share pictures of the back of both cap boxes and the cartridge box? Believe it or not more can be determined from the rear of these boxes!

Given the assortment of accoutrements, I'd put my money on this being the militia related gear of a person of Northern extraction. Maybe a carpetbagger? It could be a really nice collection of surplus too. Eitherway, super cool, especially the "U. States" wooden canteen.

This area is close to a lot of conflicts involving General Forrest its possible it could be from one of his troops. I need to ask Anne to see who the family is.

Except they are all Union . Maybe the farm owner found them, hid them in the barn 150 years ago? Were they in a box? Had to be or the rats would have eaten them looks like. Did you tell the present farm owner?

There were several boxes, some items were in really poor shape, leather accoutrements dry and brittle, metal pieces rusted together or unrecognizable and some paper and fabric items disintegrated.

I didn't think about everything being union, yes the current owners know of the items and said I can have anything I find.

I think more in line of a 19th century pack rat or early collector who had served in some capacity.

If you have photos or they still exist and can take photos, we'd like to see them - you may find out that among this crowd things may not be as unrecognizable as you think!

From the style of the numerals 532 on the last piece I'd opine German, likely WWI era or earlier.

This is just great. It always amazes me what still exists unfound in old attics, barns, and the like after all these decades. You are a lucky fellow indeed ! And if that wood turns out to be chestnut you are more than lucky. Thanks for posting.
