Hi,
I'm in the UK, and many years ago I bought a Burnside carbine for approx $500 at the exchange rate prevailing.
It is stamped 1864 and looks like a fifth model. It has matching serial numbers 6411 throughout. The woodwork is sound, but with lots of smallish knocks and bruises. There is no rust pitting, just a light brownish patina overall.
Please can anyone advise whether I can establish if it was a military issue and to which unit? Also would be very gratefull of an approximate current value.

Your Burnside was made under military contract, whether it was ever issued or not is impossible to determine. Approximate value is best determined by following the antique arms sales sites on the internet for actual selling prices rather than the price asked for.

Springfield Research Service has a semi-complete list of Burnside Carbine serial numbers. The problem is that the owner of the service is Greedy and will not only charge you for looking up the information on your carbine (he might or might not have) and force you to subscribe to his magazine.

You can "Google" up Springfield Research Service" to get to their website.

I checked the serial number against the SRS list (I saved it back when it was online for free). 6411 does not match. FWIW, I have checked a lot of Burnside carbines against the list and have never had a match.
