Hello,

I was wondering if any of you had any ideas on how to track down some gun histories based on serial number. I currently have two Burnside Carbines that I am slowly restoring and was hoping to find some history on them. They are for my small personal collection and i alwatys like to know as much of the story as I can.

Thanks much! That's more than i expected! Do you know if it gives any dates? I really appreciate your help.

Thanks, Caleb

Hi Caleb, you hit the jackpot on one of them! Format is: Serial Number, Date of Record, Unit issued to. This is a Federal unit. The date is after the end of the war, but that doesn't mean it was issued at that time, merely that it was when the record was made, probably when it mustered out. You need to add photos.

Unit history is brief:

District of Morganza, Dept. of the Gulf, to August, 1864. Separate Cavalry Brigade, 19th Corps, Dept. of the Gulf, to November, 1864.

SERVICE.--Duty at Brownsville and on the Rio Grande, Texas, until July, 1864. Ordered to New Orleans, La., thence to Morganza August 6, and duty there fill November. Consolidated with 1st Texas Cavalry November 1, 1864.

Thank you! This is really exciting, i appreciate you taking the time, I really didn't expect to get any hits back of those. I appreciate your time!

Nothing hit close on the #23837?

I will be posting pictures soon, it is actually in the mail, excited to get it! I'll keep you guys posted, thanks again for your help.

I was reading about the Battle of Palmito Ranch, the final battle of the Civil War, and coincidentally discovered that the 2nd Texas Cavalry was involved in that battle. The unit history that I previously linked to says that the unit was consolidated with the 1st Texas in 1864, so either it was later separated again or another unit was formed. In any case, you may have a weapon used at the very last battle!

I am trying to track down the history of a cannon made by Phoenix Iron Works in 1862 serial number #476, a 3" Ordinance Rifle.. I looked up PIW's homepage but they are out of business. Anyone have any ideas? I think it at least had the potential to have been used in Gettysburg.

FWIW, as I am guessing you probably already know this, Field Artillery Weapons of the Civil War lists it as being located at "West Sutton, MA; altered to breechloader at Manila Ordnance Depot, Philippine Islands." Leaves me wondering if it was used in the Spanish-American War too?

I did not know that. Thank you. I will continue down the path you provided and let you know where it takes me.

Thank you again,

Sincerely,

Spec
