The historian Stephen Freeling in his book the "South vs the South" that the inability of the Confederacy to take over Missouri really hurt them because St.Louis was an indispensable manufacturing center for the Union brown water navy.

St. Louis was an important manufacturing center for the Navy/Army. They also built ironclads in Mound City, Ill., 3 Eads ships and 4 in Carondelet near St. Louis. They also built Pook's turtles, Essex Class double turrented ships, tinclads, and 38 mortar boats. The Eads yards are still there, still being used, but the ways were removed in 1933.
