He was in the turpentine manufacturing business in Mobile until the business was destroyed by fire in 1867. He then went into the iron-smelting business with his brother-in-law William B. Wood.
 
Buck was a member of Congress from March 1869 to March 1871 but declined to run for reelection.He endorsed and campaigned for Benjamin S. Turner,a black man who went on to win the election.
