Lt. Colonel of the Maryland Battalion? I wonder if that was the Baltimore/D.C. Battalion who performed very well in Mexico.

In 1854 he was commander of Fort Humbolt where U.S.Grant resigned. Buchanan was thought of by Grant as a martinet. And Grant was said to be drinking heavily at this time as well. It was a possible threat of disciplinary action that persuaded Captain Grant to resign.

Buchanan was promoted to brigadier on November 29, 1862 but it expired on March 4, 1863. The Senate never acted upon his nomination and it expired. This pretty much ended his career in the field. He went on to command Fort Delaware and serve on several boards but as a colonel.
