Here's my brother's cheap Spanish squirrel gun. He lost the trigger guard, two escutcheons and nose piece. I made a replacement nose out of cow horn that was dyed black with Foebings (sp?). Additional features include a compass and a thing that tells time, cap box (not seen). The toe was chipped and a piece of walnut fitted to restore it. He also lost the brass washers for the screws that held the lock to the stock so I made a sideplate patterend after some military one. As to accoutrements, he got a horn with Moose and Squirrel, Boris and Natasha and "
moose must die" in cyrillic and a 30 grain powder measure (made from horn) that was dyed black (and barely visible against the flap of the hunting bag). Also seen is the hunting pouch for it, bullet starter, vent pick (with leftover horn piece) and a 4 round bullet board out of scavanged oak. There was a cavity between the lock bolster and the stock and a piece of metal was soldered in to fill the gap. Then a piece of wood was fitted to the stock that was pinned and glued to hide the filler metal. Like I said, it was a cheap Spanish squirrel gun and they ALL have that issue. A key fob was also made for it. Then a bit more fitting was done before it was delivered to him.
In the image with the repaired toe you can see the four legged magnifying lamp ($20 at Goodwill) and an open drawer to my Kennedy tool chest with a selection of files and a portable vise that is stowed on the handle of the Kennedy tool chest.
The reason why the tang is raised above the stock is because the maker removed too much wood from that area. You can't lower the tang because the lock won't match up/time with the nipple on the barrel. A solution would be to add more wood (glue a matching piece and then rasp/scrape it to fit. The gun is cheap and there's a reason why it was cheap. Buy good stuff once and don't regret it. OK for starter or for teaching kids of just to have a hunting gun for small game. It may even be good enough for a rendezvous but don't take it to Friendship Indiana or show it at a Gunmaker's Fair. Sidenote: Vise is an Athol Racthet Handle vise. $95 used at Friendship.
