Big Buttons...?

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the excellent research... certainly agree it would seem to explain the uneven eyes, yet also makes me reflect that, compared to some of the others shown in the article, our man here didn't come out of it all that bad.
 
Perhaps this also holds the key to understanding the buttons... given his appearance and advanced state of recovery, and considering how long it might have taken to go through surgeries and heal to this state, the photo may well be post bellum and perhaps that explains the cloth covered buttons... what do you guys think? The counter-point might be that ruby ambrotypes were more common in pre or early years of the war, and not so much in later or post war years (tintype and CDV's becoming more common in late war years). Probably no way to know for sure...

No way of telling really, but I like it even more.
