He was requested by the Army commander to defend Fort Hatteras because the fort's armament was comprised of "naval ordinance". After being captured at Fort Hattaras he was confined for 11 months at Fort Columbus on Governor's Island, then Ft. Warren. After being exchanged he was sent to England as a captain. In England he secured the North Carolina and the Mississippi( Laird Rams) for the Confederacy. Another source say it was the Stonewall and the Georgia but I question that as the Stonewall was built in France wasn't it? After these ships were siezed by British Authorities he then moved his Confederate operations, As Flag Officer, to Paris and continued procurement operations for the navy. He resigned his commission on Febuary 25, 1865 and returned to America.
