With Fall approaching, it is time to think about some good beverages to serve. This beverage is especially good to serve as drink at teenage parties. It also highlights use of Allspice.

4 quarts apple cider
1 cup orange juice
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons Orange Peel
1 teaspoon whole Allspice
1/2 teaspoon Mace
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon Coriander Seed
2 teaspoons whole Cloves
2 tablespoons Cinnamon Decors

Combine all ingredients in large saucepan. Cover. Bring to a boiling point, then simmer 30 minutes. Strain. This is a delicious hot mulled drink. It may also be served over ice as a cold cider punch.

The cider with orange mixed sounds yummy; I will try a smaller portion. I'd use cinnamon sticks, though.

[The beer looks good, too, but out here in the Portland, OR area we are in an area famous for its craft beers, so have many, many delicious varieties to try!] Oops, just remembered that my new avatar was active in the temperance movement after the war!

Cider in the Pacific Northwest has definitely improved now that the growers are growing more flavorful varieties than Red Delicious! I still miss the McIntosh apples from back east, though. Macs seem to need colder winters so don't do as well out here.

I'd be more tempted to have it iced I think. I never liked warm cider as much as the cold variety. I'll have to give this a try. Plus, this give me an excuse to restock my fall/winter spices. Such a fragrant drink.

Oddly enough I found this recipe recently for Cider Spice Cake. It's made with a cider infused buttercream frosting. Sounded good but seemed complicated to make.

I remember that the ski slopes in New England would serve at the lodges a hot spiced apple cider but add a shot of bourbon to it and it was called a broken leg.really hit the spot when you came in from skiing.

If one shot of bourbon leads to a 'broken leg' they aren't very good at holding their liquor!

Though in all seriousness that does sound like a nice addition to hot cider, especially on a cold, snowy kind of day.

Here is another Spiced Apple Cider recipe. This one is from Clabber Girl. I get recipes from them every month.

Spiced Apple Cider

1 gallon apple cider
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon whole cloves
2 tablespoons Clabber Girl Cornstarch
2 oranges
1 liter apple juice
1/2 teaspoon whole allspice
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
2 cinnamon sticks plus additional for garnish
