With no previous Military training or experience he was made a captain in the 3rd Minnesota Infantry, in a few years he would be leading a division in Arkansas and Alabama.

Andrew's took over command of the 3rd Minnesota Infantry right after the Vicksburg Siege. This would have been on July 15, 1863.He commanded but wasn't commissioned a Colonel until August 9, 1863.He was promoted to brigadier on Jan. 5, 1864.

Andrew's was a prolific writer, some of his writings include "My Experience in Rebel Prisons", "History of the Campaign of Mobile", and "Brazil, It's Conditions and Prospects".

As editor of the Minnesota Union he supported the policies of Lincoln but personally he was a Douglas supporter.
