Monuments After the fall

You have valid answers to my statements and I am grateful for that. I don't think anyone following this site believes that people who side with monuments are racists but outside this website you know people think that. As for my Merry Christmas comment that's totally true, work in government and yeah its true. The museums I agree tell a different story and you can choose to go or not but what about the museum's that receive federal funding? Can enough pressure be put on the Federal Government to alter or eliminate these museum's? I think these are valid concerns, who ever thought we would see monuments being removed. I would never have an issue with someone replying to one of my comments or posts. I value your views and totally understand we don't all have to agree all the time, that would be boring. Thank you for your response's.

Thanks for responding

I don't know about that - and neither do you. It's best to not generalize. It's hard to not do sometimes ... I know... but it is what's best. If you met me outside of the forum - you would probably think because I am Black - I would think that - and you would be very wrong. So, I hope you understand my reasoning for saying that.

On Museums...

Well, I think it's different because from what I know - in situations like Demopolis - outside organizations have funded and placed them there. They were allowed by the local officials to place them there. I don't know the in's and out's how that all works - meaning placing privately funded monuments on public property.

P.S. If you do - I would love to learn about the process.

Museums again are different - they have boards, committees, educational/historian advisors, community advisors - just a host of voices and opinions that are considered and taken into account. They also tend to create a narrative - a story - and tell both sides - so again you can't really compare. I'm sorry.

If you look at organizations who are sponsors of the Confederate monuments - it's not balanced like that - it's very specific aka interest-focused -- and they really could care less about what others think. They don't have too - it's their money and not tax payers.

On Christmas...

I think we should be mindful that everyone doesn't celebrate Christmas. But, I don't think they would be offended...lol. If they are - they probably are just having a bad day. Try again this year - and offer them a candy cane -- no one can say no to that.

And ditto - anytime!

I think this is a good Case Study that it is easier to keep a Monument from going Up than it is to take one Down. However you could argue if a Government Employee is in control of a Car, it ain't that hard.

Another factoid. Demopolis is 50 miles from Selma. If they don't want to erect a Monument of Dr King, (a Great American), they can take a short ride and see 1. It's a big old World and Room enough for all. In this Day and Age I just don't think that people, especially the Black Community is being Silenced.

Hi Terry,

Thanks for responding and the kind words

I understand. I do.

I think Demopolis will make the right decision in the end. What that will be for their community - I don't know.

I think steering clear from feelings and/or placing ourselves in someone else's shoes -- is one of the long standing issues in America today. But, that is my personal opinion.

Thinking rational while allowing feelings to come into play has made me who I am today. It allows me to see both sides of an argument, an open heart to listen to another's opinion and making sure I am respectful, careful and mindful when addressing someone or an issue.

Even when like you - my agreement is only partial -- or sometimes - when I don't agree at all.

I hope we can all start to do that more - I think it would really help change our relationships with each other.

Thanks again

Like I said, I love your posts. Respect, kindness and empathy go a looooooong way. And you demonstrate that consistently. So glad you're on this forum.

I agree ;) And that is what seems to be causing the uproar. I hope this all works out. I really do.

Thanks again!
