A biography of Abbot states that he commanded the "Siege Train" at Petersburg.I guess that's what a chief of artillery does?
Henry Hunt served as Chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac until the end of the War. Abbot served under Hunt. The siege artillery was composed of guns too heavy for use in the field, but suitable for long range bombardment. The 13" mortar called the "Dictator" would be such a piece.

George W.C. Lee was first in Abbott's West Point class which
also continued J.E.B. Stuart, Stephen D. Lee. O.O. Howard, Thomas Ruger, James Deshler, John Pegram, Archibald Gracie, and William D. Pender amongst others.
