A Good Book?

I want to start learning about the cival war more then what was taught to me in school, which was pretty basic. I understand that the cival war is quite large, but I want to get a book on CD that really covers the war. I like books on CD, because I am in my car a lot, and by the time I get home from work, I am way to tired. I really want to know the challenges that President Lincoln faced. Can anyone suggest a good book or book on CD?

I'd certainly recommend Shelby Foote if you can find it. His voice alone would be a welcome companion while driving. His three volume set is an excellent composite of the war.

If you can download shows to play later, go to CivilWarTalk radio by Prof. Gerald Prokopowicz of Eastern Carolina University. He interviews notable authors and others involved with Civil War activities (park rangers, reenactors, museum directors, curators, etc). Also go to the Pritzker Military Library and there's a bunch of authors who give talks there.

And welcome to the forum.

This is an entirely new genre for me, Duke. I do not spend enough time in my car to think about having something read to me. However, last summer I did get a copy of "Team or Rivals" on CD. Whilst driving to Boise, I listened to that over and over and over. There was a point, somewhere in Wyoming I think, where precious was almost on the point of leaning over the console and tearing my face off.

You want my copy? PM me with your snail-mail addy and I'll send it to you. It's just gathering dust, and the chance that I'll ever reload it and listen to it again are just two: slim and none.

Seriously.

Ole

Thanks guys actually Ole I just bought that on CD today. Thankyou though for the offer. I will check out those interviews also.

I, also, spend a lot of time in my car (an hour and a half commute each day). I downloaded Team of Rivals to my **** and listened to that, and just finished the CD set of McPherson's Lincoln as military commander. The former was very good but the latter will give you a better overall summary of the war.

I have not seen Shelby Foote's entire Civil War on CD, but the chapters on Gettysburg was excerpted as Stars in Their Courses and the Vickburg Campaign as The Beleaguered City. As Foote himself reads them, they are excellent to listen to.
