Ammo 32 Pounder Grapeshot

This is a large grapeshot round, Civil War era, that I bought recently. It is 2.87 inches in diameter, matching the criteria for a grapeshot from a 32 Lb. cannon. The weight is unknown, because none of my household scales are accurate. It was bought off of an antiques dealer who bought it from a now long dead relic hunter, back in the 1990s. Because I felt really good about it's authenticity, I bought it, though it was very rusted. I cleaned some of the rust off before I took the first picture, and the last picture is it cleaned up.

Seller wanted $65 for it, I haggled him to take it down to $45.

Nice purchase---to my untrained eye. But you don't own the full stand, do you?
During my travels this weekend, I made a few stops to look for some grapeshot round for someone on the forum---I think it was you. I had no luck. One place that I inquired, the owner said he had a local who cleans him out of his shot and rebuilds the canister round.

He is in Corinth and does great work on his rebuilds. I wish I could remember his name but it will come to me. I picked up the quilted grape for a good friend of mine. Its an awesome piece.

This same ball would have been used in a 32# stand of quilted grapeshot also, while a shot for a 32# canister would have been 2.02-2.06". You have a winner. Congratulations.

As far as the balls are concerned, all that you need is 8 more; but the plates are the hard part. Good Luck. Also, be careful what you wish for; the "Iron Madness" is a hard disease to shake once you've caught it.

Might be a fake. The seam is supposed to be vertical not horizontal.

Would his name be Harvey Warrner? That is the name on the business card that I can barely read in your first image.

Grape! That is plum shot! The battleship Yamato had "bee hive" rounds that fired through their 18.1" guns. The shot was about that size.

Yes, lead shot was utilized later in the War, especially in rifled canister such as the Dyer and Hotchkiss.

Don't forget the Parrott case shot. here is one I dug and you can still see the lead balls and matrix on the inside.

I've dug case shot before, but not lead canister that size.
