24th Georgia Infantry

Looking for any information in reference to the regiment or brigade in the Battle of Deep Bottom fought on August 16, 1864. There were a large number of the 24th Georgia either killed, wounded or captured during the engagement.

Reviewing the regiments "service records" on line I found a large number of soldiers captured at Deep Bottom. In an earlier post I questioned the regiments participation at Battle of Deep Bottom in August 1864. My research located the regiment in the Valley with Early during the same time period. An example of a service record on line: "Jacob F. Eller - Private - August 24, 1861. Captured Deep Bottom, Virginia August 16, 1864. Died of variola at Elmira, New York February 9, 1865. Grave number #1953, Woodlawn National Cemetery."

Going through service records on Fold3 I compiled the following for Eller, Jacob F. - Private. Appears on muster roll for company D dated August 24 to October 31, 1861 with the following: enlisted August 24, 1861, where Towns County, Georgia, by whom Captain Corn, period "war", "present" and "sick in hospital". Appears on register for Chimborazo Hospital, No. 4 Richmond, Virginia disease "fever remitt." Admitted June 20, 1862 and returned to duty June 24, 1862. Medical Director's Office Richmond, Virginia: hospital "General Hospital, No. 1" admitted "September 30, 1862". Appears on Morning Report for 1st Division General Hospital Camp Winder, Richmond, Virginia dated October 4, 1862 with comment "received in hospital". Medical Director's Office Richmond, Virginia: hospital "Winder" admitted "October 4, 1862" and returned to duty "October 8, 1862". Medical Director's Office Richmond, Virginia: hospital "General Hospital, No. 3" furloughed "November 11, 1862". Roll of Prisoner of War captured by General Sheridan and sent to Washington, DC "August 20, 1864". Prisoner of War at Old Capital Prison Washington, DC date committed August 21, 1864, from Front Royal, Virginia, when August 16, 1864 and sent to "Elmira, New York August 28, 1864". Appears on company muster roll dated May & June 1864 and July & August 1864 "absent, prisoner of war". Appears on Record of Deceased Prisoner of War at Elmira, New York: date of alteration February 10, 1865, where captured Front Royal, when captured August 16, 1864, joined station August 29, 1864, died February 9, 1865, cause of death "variola" (smallpox).

Not sure who transcribed the information but there are numerous mistakes and information omitted with the 24th Georgia roster on line. Wonder if the same issue is found with other regiments? I am compiling the service data for each of the members of the regiment for my forthcoming book on the regiment.

Below is an example of the information I am compiling for the regiment:

John C Whitworth was my ancestor, and one of the subjects of the book I am working on. His full name was John Claiborne Whitworth. As it's also my last name I can confirm it's often mistaken for Whiteworth. He was killed at the Battle of Cedar Creek. He was promoted to Ensign just after the Wilderness, and reportedly died with the flag wrapped around him crying "Rally the flag, boys!"

@lelliott19, @xlsteve, @Ga24thCo.K, @Podad, @KeithO Some where I read there maybe a photo of Colonel Robert McMillian at the Cyclorama in Atlanta. I looked up the Cyclorama on the internet but found it is closed permanently. Does anyone know if exhibits were moved or where the photo may be?

The stuff from the former Cyclorama is now at the Atlanta History Center.

Perfect, thank you! Just posted the same request for information on the general discussion board but you answered.

@Kyle R I did the same thing, looking for that rumored photo of Col. McMillan. I heard about it from a friend months ago and contacted the Atlanta History Museum. They looked through what they had logged but much of the items from the Cyclorama were sent to storage.... UGGG!! I got in touch with the gentleman who is in charge of the storage items and he was going to look through his photos of the items to see if he could find anything on Col. McMillan. It's been about a month and I haven't heard anything back yet. I think I will reach out again to see if he maybe put it on his back burner. I'll be a little squeaky wheel...lol. I'll let you know if I hear back.
