22nd Virginia Cavalry question

The direct paternal line for my family tree has my gg grandfather and several of his brothers serving with the 22nd Virginia Cavalry. From what little I know about this outfit it seems to be more of an irregular or maybe even a guerilla-type of unit vs. a more mainstream one (but I could be wrong on that). What I would like to try to find out is what weapons they were issued, assuming they were issued weapons at all vs. using whatever they already had.

As a tribute to them, I'd like to acquire an example of what they used. I've looked for diaries, etc. in hopes that it might reveal some info but so far no luck in learning anything about their weapons (and not much more about the unit as a whole).

Thought I'd try here given that there are those who know tons more than me (that's not hard to do!) and who might be able to answer the question or maybe point me in the direction to find out more on my own. So, can anyone shed some light on this one? Thanks!

That would be Bowman's Battalion. Let me see what I can find for you.

This will get you started.

It was "Bowens" 22 Va.

22nd Regiment, Virginia Cavalry (Bowen's Virginia Mounted Riflemen) The 22nd Cavalry Regiment completed its organization in October, 1863. The unit served in W.L. Jackson's and McCausland's Brigade and confronted the Federals in Tennessee, western Virginia, and the Shenandoah Valley. During April, 1865, it disbanded. The field officers were Colonel Henry S. Bowen, Lieutenant Colonel John T. Radford, and Major Henry F. Kendrick.

22nd Va Cav is designated as "Mtd Infy"

1/12/64 Authority granted to Col Bowen 22nd Va Mtd Infy to raise recruits with a view to form a new Regt in the counties of [McDowell, Buchannan, Wise & Lee] only so long in Lee as the conscript law can't be enforced

It was "Bowens" 22 Va.
Thanks for the correction as I was using my phone and it was way into Happy Hour:D

The 22nd is one of those unites that was consolidated, re-consolidated, units added etc. Part of the 22nd was Baldwin's Virginia Partisan Rangers. Attached is Col Bowen's records and it gives some insight into the history and make up of the unit. What was your GG Grandfathers name?

John Henry Stapleton was my gg grandfather.

I believe he had some brothers who were also part of the 22nd - one was William Stapleton who was also know as "Dixie Bill" according to family lore. I have mixed info on a couple of other brothers (George Washington Stapleton and Anderson Stapleton) - looks like they may have been in the 22nd or maybe in the 50th Virginia infantry (or both?)

I appreciate the information. I looked through what you posted in hopes of finding any help on discovering what weapons they used. I also read the book by Jeffery C. Weaver on the 22nd Virginia Cavalry but did not note any reference to weapons used.

Still hoping someone can shed some light on this for me - thank you

I have John's records and will post them when I get home. In answering your question I would say that the 22nd was not at the top the list for arms issue and they would have brought what they had from home and then arm themselves with what they could pickup from battles they won.

I show that George, James, John, Walter and William all served in Co A 22nd VA. The only photograph I can find of an enlistedman in the 22nd, William M. Patrick, interesting that he is in a frock.

Thank you! I really look forward to seeing his records. I hate to ask but could you email them as well? If so i can message you my email address (or post it here if easier)

I suspect you're right about the weapons but was hoping to discover some (any) document that stated a weapon they used. While maybe not "issued" it would allow me to have a confirmed martial tie to a weapon used by my gg grandfather's regiment. I'll keep searching in hopes of finding a weapon mentioned (while maybe not the one used by my relative it "could have" been which I think is the best I can hope for given the nature of this unit).

here you go
