2nd Virginia Cavalry information?

So, I recently learned that I have ancestors who fought on BOTH sides of the war. The more recent discovery was a great-great grandfather from Virginia who served with the Confederate forces. We knew that after moving to Kansas from Franklin County, Virginia he would have had Southern sympathies, but given his age (early 40s) he would have been skipped over for service, but I guess that wasn't true. Nothing in the family was ever mentioned about his military service. But then again, one of his sons married a gal from a staunch abolitionist family (ha!), so that might explain why. My daughter found his obituary (published in 1896) online, which mentioned he fought for the Confederacy. According to NPS website, his service was with Company D, 2nd Virginia Cavalry. We're not certain of the dates of his mustering in or out.

Any information about the 2nd Virginia Cavalry - "Franklin Rangers" is appreciated!

Fletcher Simmons' surviving Confederate records show him as enlisting in Company D, 2nd Virginia Cavalry, by Captain Holland, at Franklin County, VA, on January 1, 1864.
Present to Feb. 29, 1864. Present April 1, 1864. Shown Present during March-April, 1864. At the close of May-June, 1864 recorded as absent, home on sick furlough. For July-August, 1864 shown as Present. No further record.

Randolph McKim was appointed the chaplain of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry in August, 1864 and gives account of the unit in the last months of the war...
