19th New York Cavalry

My GGGrandfather lied about his age and joined the 19th New York Volunteer Cavalry in August of 1863 (just 3 weeks after his 16th birthday). Can anyone tell me what type of weapons he was issued? Sabers? Carbines? Rifles/muskets? Revolvers? Thanks.

According to John McAulay "U.S. Military Carbines" pg.43 in Aug. 1863 they were redesignated as the 1st New York Dragoons and received 1000 Joslyn M1862 carbines

Thats a breech loader I believe. I'm a little rusty on my carbine knowledge but i believe that was one of the more common carbines in federal service..

I believe there were two primary models of the Joslyn carbine used during the war. The Model 1862 that used a pripritory Joslyn cartridge and the updated Model 1864 which fired the 56/50 Spencer rim fire cartridge.
