Tell me more! 1862-dated Austrian Lorenz Rifle

This is just my opinion for what it is worth and I am sure to catch wrath from stating it. I wouldn't fire any of these old Civil War muskets. No one really knows where they have been these last 160 years or what they have been through. No telling what is going on in the metal under the surface of the barrel of something this old. I just have mine hanging as relics and enjoying researching the history.

Here's something you might find interesting...it's an english translation of an 1857 manual on the Lorenz. Lots of kewl stuff in it. Lemme know what you think of it once you've skimmed through it.

I know it is a translation, but I was still surprised to see the dimensions in U. S. standard measurements, other than what was afterward within the (...). Very in depth, and for an enthusiast, a deeply engrossing manual.

I certainly don't plan on shooting my Civil War pieces frequently, just once in a blue moon to feel what it is like. I do agree with you, shooting these 160+ year pieces will carry some risk. I decided to take my Burnside out to the range as it was in good condition and I was able to field strip it to see everything under the wood. In addition, my gunsmith gave it the greenlight. For the Lorenz I'm leaning towards just hanging it up on the wall, especially if I decide not to disassemble it.

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you very much, the content is amazing from what I've skimmed so far and I'll probably read it front-to-back in the near future.
