A recent acquisition. If I measured correctly, it is 54 cal. At the muzzle. The barrel length is 22 inches. It appears to have 6 lands and grooves. No cartouche is visible. S/N 38157. I don't know if this is a civil war gun, but it definitely looks like it spent some time in the saddle. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The severe wear across the left side of the butt stock was most likely made by the metal sling swivel as it rubbed back and forth on the wood while hanging on the leather shoulder strap. The barrel stuck through a short leather loop and the result was keeping the carbine hanging from the cavalry man's right side where it was normally carried when the soldier was horseback. I have had a carbine with wear in that same area on the stock.

I read somewhere that they would have had three lands and grooves. Would this have been modified to six, or would this be a later production?
