1842 Springfield carbine?

Found this today and wanted to get opinions? Is it a legit weapon or a Frankenstein?!

That's neat looking. It looks like someone tried to mimic an 1873 cavalry carbine. Is it rifled? The fact that it's missing a rear sight leads me to believe that it's an altered piece. I'd still love to have it

I'll be honest but I cant remember if the barrel was rifled, I don't believe so. It apparently has been modified but by who and when?!

I wanted to find more out about it before a possible purchase? It was all very well altered at least it appears that way! Someone had some knowledge when they did this!

My guess is that it's a modified 1847 Springfield Cavalry Musketoon. They were made to ease logistics by using interchangeable parts with the 1842 Springfield Muskets.

I like the musketoon idea. The barrel length was 26 inches did that look about right?

They're asking 1000.00 but may haggle. I really don't know so was curious what the group thought!!

The lock is just immaculate! Tight and crisp and lettering is bright!!

If we can verify it is in fact a cavalry musketoon one sold at auction recently for 1600 and it was complete. I suspect that if you wanted to find an authentic stock that might take a trick or two

It's a franken gun. The lock date is too early for any of the M1847 carbines (cavalry, artillery, and sapper). The M1847s locks are also smaller than M1842 musket locks. If it was a M1847 cavalry carbine it would also have brass furniture.

This gun may be an attempt to make a M1855 Carbine on the cheap, but if that was the intent it was poorly executed.

Thanks to everyone for their insights and opinions! I appreciate it!! I purchased a beautiful 1860 cav saber from this dealer but I could not pull the trigger on this musket. It just didn't feel rite….. thanks again happy Easter all!!!

It's been cut down, you can see where the band band retaining spring channel has been filled.
