Newbie looking for a nice pistol

I've got a small collection of Mexican-American War, Civil War and WWII items. I've always wanted a military issues pistol from late 18th to early/mid 19th century. Thinking in terms of both display and investment, is there a particular piece someone could point me to?

I'm trying to stay under $1,000 or so. Looking for a weapon that is all original to period (flintlock to percussion is fine).

I've had my eyes on a 1842 Navy percussion pistol due to my family's naval history and it's limited production. I found a nice one for around $1,200...but before I made that big of an investment, I would really love to hear some other collectors thoughts. Thank you!

Search numerous auctions & dealers online. Bid low 20-50 times and bam what a surprise you won. Try looking for a Whitney CW period pistol with Navy markings too. Anchor stamped on the barrel. Or go for a Colt Navy M1851, of course many of them did not go to the Navy.

Welcome, enjoy. Scan through a bunch of dealers to see the price ranges asked. Remember condition effects the price, but to me I'd go the extra or wait for another to come along. Been there, done that is great to a point. Decide on what you are after and then go through all the dealer, auction sites or any gun shows in your area. Once you have narrowed your choice down, get yourself a book focused on that item. Your book investment will pay for itself instead of getting something you will be unhappy with later. Take a look in small arm forum for listings of a bunch of books. Granted some are very expensive, so post your questions. Use the search feature to find post about similar firearms. There is a vast wealth of knowledge to be gained. Members have many collectables and most are willing to share information.

Gunderson (hyperlinked to handguns) has good stuff and well within your price range. I recommend checking there and seeing if find anything you like. When you do end up buying something, make sure to post it on here. We always like seeing new additions to members' collections
