Sorry for large pictures.

This is another piece from a friend's collection that I recently was able to purchase.

I believe this is a model 1840? S&K Solingen marked so an early war import from Germany? Scabbard is also s&k marked.

Were these mostly used by cavalry or just anyone who could afford one?

Any comments welcome.

beautiful example! I would be proud to have it

I don't have my references handy so I'm winging it. S&K produced sample model 1840's for weapon trials in 1839. They won the contract and provided 1000 to the US in 1840. During the Mexican War, Ames couldn't keep up with the demand so the US contracted with S&K for another 1000. All of these swords have markings on the spine of the blade near the hilt. They should also have proof marks on the hilt; usually a crown over "g" on the flat side of the knuckle bow. S&K also sold model 1840's at the beginning of the Civil War. These do not have markings on the spine or on the hilt. I don't know if they sold model 1840's to both sides. My guess is that yours is a wartime sword and a nice one at that!
