On Aug. 29, 1862, during the Second Battle of Bull Run, Union soldiers could see a young woman helping the wounded seek shelter under a rock ledge, while taking fire herself. At Petersburg in June 1864, Sgt. Frederick O. Talbot, of the First Maine Heavy Artillery, found himself standing beside this same woman as she beckoned soldiers to the frontline breastwork to be treated. He was told that the men of the Fifth Michigan Infantry would have anyone's "life in a minute" for saying "any harm of her."

Great post Lee! There were quite a few women over the years who were discovered to be masquerading as men so they could be doctors, engineers, lawyers and all the professions dominated by men...nothing as subversive as a blue stocking back then...and sometimes even now!

2 laundresses of the 1st MN Lt Arty were killed by enemy fire at Shiloh. 4 laundresses of the 4th MN VI were shot while riding in a hospital train by guerrillas. Two later died of their wounds. A laundress of the 4th MN VI was w/ the Regt from Ft Snelling until the Grand Review, the men insisted she march w/ them in the Grand Review.

At the battle of Allatoona Pass three women were found in the ranks of the CS attacking force. One was killed, two wounded and captured.

Women served, not often but when they did they made an impact on the men around them.
