I read that the Special Forces guys were sneaking around Ft. Benning in berets until Kennedy showed up and made them official.

Like when todays Army wears black berets that they stole the color from the Army Rangers. All because some top General at the time hated the Rangers over an old beef with them when he was told to remove the beret from his head many years earlier when he was in an Armor unit.

The way Headwear and uniforms have been shuffled around I just look for ID these days.
